The Lily Among Roses by ScarletteDiscord The Lily Among Roses by ScarletteDiscord
An image of Matthew I had in my head and decided to draw. He's based loosely on Kitak's Matthew, but it's not necessarily him, just inspired ;)

The title is both literal and metaphorical. It refers to the bouquet in his hands which has a lily and two roses but can also be a reference to Matthew himself (a colony of French origin in the British Empire), so the flowers can represent the characters themselves: Alfred and Arthur, the two roses, and Matthew, the lily.

Until I read the description, I was wondering why you drew a fourteen year old France. Stupid Me!

Anyway, I love the picture and the symbolism in the flowers!

That outfit he's wearing kinda makes him look like France almost. Almost...
Beautiful concept though.

Thank you very much :)

As for the outfit, since he was a French colony at one point in time, it would make sense for him to look a little bit like France, at least that was what I was trying to portray here. I hope I didn't confuse you too much :)

Of course! Well, Canada does have some French influence (especially in Quebec), and he kind of looks like France too. Must be his "sexy (French) 'air"...:giggle:

Hey Scarlette, I saw this post recently about someone who's taking requests for Hetalia-themed Journal skins and seeing as I'd just gotten a Premium Membership, I thought I'd ask for one as well.

I would like to ask the artist to use your picture here, but neither of us will go ahead on this if you don't want us to. So, if you could please get back to me on that, I'd really appreciate it - thanks!

Here's the post I was referring to if you'd like to check the person's creds first: [link]

Yes! I think this would look awesome! :D Never even thought about this being a journal skin, but if they think it'll work, go for it. Can't wait to see what it'll look like!

This is gorgeous! I love the detail you put into the clothes, and the flowers are very well done (can't draw flowers to save her life :iconorzplz: ). I also really like the colors you used, particularly for the ribbons. :) And I agree with Pineapple; I want to hug him. :3

Thanks! :D

Thank my new tablet for those details ;) My old pen could only do one brush size and couldn't simulate pen pressure like this new one. I was able to get all kinds of little things done.

I wasn't sure about those ribbons, glad you like them :)

Mattie is quite huggable isn't he? lol

Oh wow...this looks freaking AWESOME! :glomp:

I love the outfit you designed for him, and the significance with the flowers - as if my calling my fics "Sous la Rose" didn't make it obvious enough *shot*

And...just wondering, but did you draw this outfit off the Copley painting you showed me? The frock coat looks very familiar. ;)

Thank you! :D

I know I love it, too and I'm glad the outfit came out well. I had to redesign it a few times but the only obstacle was choosing the right color scheme. The flower reference is my favorite part of this, its what made want to draw it in the first place. :)

Lol, it is kinda my default reference but the only part of it to make the pic was the pale pink lining. Everything else was pure artistic license ;)

lol - I think the pink lining IS the most distinct thing from that painting. I know that's what caught my eye when I first saw it; and the shell of the coat was also dark blue, if I recall correctly....

And you're welcome :)

Hmm...I always thought it was black, but that could be due to my screen :)

I guess it depends on the angle and the lighting and stuff. On my computer, it looks like a super-super dark blue - it's got a slight velvety sheen to it.

Actually, here's a description I found just now: "This memorable painting has lost none of its ability to enchant. His mastery of color is astonishing: the black or very, very dark blue velvet jacket against the vibrant, intense red satin drapery; the modulations provided by the pink collar; the bright ruby lips; the warm skin and hair tones, as well; and the pale yellow vest; the white shirt flair; the superbly designed shirt cuffs (and their reflections, please notice, on the mahogany tabletop or in the mahogany tabletop)€”all of this is handled with absolute security and sensitivity." So I guess it's anyone's guess whether the coat was actually blue or black.

I see...to be totally honest I wasn't even looking at the painting while doing this, so the colors almost seem like a coincidence to me. :hmm: Unless I know exactly what colors I want to use, I just play around with them until something starts to click.
